It’s 7:45, the bus comes in five minutes and there’s something warm to find and put on: that’s when the boy’s sweater comes to the rescue. The cotton sweatshirt is still king of the playground: flexible and hard-wearing, it takes slides and football matches in its stride. A zip-up cardigan opens and closes in a second, handy when the day alternates between a heated classroom and the great outdoors. For cooler days or special occasions, a plain or jacquard wool sweater brings warmth and a smart finish.

Boy’s sweaters that stand out

How do you keep a wool sweater looking like new?

Wool doesn’t like heat or friction: wash it inside out, in cold water or at a low temperature on a delicate cycle, always following the care label. Then dry it flat, away from radiators. Between washes, a night in the fresh air is often enough to freshen it up.
